Skiing

Skiing DolomitesThere is nothing peculiarly malignant in the appearance of a pair of ski[s]. No one, to look at them, would guess at the possibilities which lurk in them.

(A. Conan Doyle)

Such was the impression by Sherlock Holmes’ creator at the turn of the 20th century. As passionate enthusiasts of the snow that each winter covers the slopes of the Alta Badia and the Dolomites, we cannot but agree with the author one hundred years later.

Skis truly do conceal hidden possibilities – they provide an outlet to escape from our daily routines; they become a means that project us up a slope and down again, a channel to leave our worries behind and to simply enjoy the cold wind that brushes against our face, the blades that seamlessly glide across the snow at every turn and especially the feeling of freedom that only a run down a snowy slope can give.

An added pleasure to the hidden possibilities of skis is surely the gift of awe-inspiring scenery and ski slopes that nature has bestowed upon us: the Dolomite mountains that encompass Alta Badia and the surrounding districts, from Val Gardena to Val Di Fassa, from Cortina to Arabba, to name a few.

Skiing in Alta Badia requires only a single ski pass to access its 53 lifts and 130 km of slopes of Corvara, Colfosco, Badia, La Villa and San Cassiano. The slopes are always perfectly groomed for all skiing levels, from the legendary Gran Risa – for decades one of the most spectacular and challenging courses in the World Cup circuit – to the fields reserved for beginners from the various ski schools.

Skiing DolomitesAlta Badia is also synonymous with the Dolomiti Superski carousel that offers skis-on connection between fantastic courses starting from our valley:

  • the renowned Sellaronda (or four passes circuit), considered one of the world’s most phenomenal skiing circuits, covering 40 kilometers through the Ladin valleys of Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa, can be completed in one day;

  • you can also complete the “First World War Ski Tour” in a day. The tour winds around the foothills of famous peaks and mountain ranges such as the Civetta, Pelmo, Tofane, Lagazuoi, Conturines, Settsass, Sassongher, Sella and Marmolada, circling the mountain that was a symbol of the World War and along the slopes where vicious battles were fought;

  • other less-frequented itineraries have runs down the Marmolada glacier (a.k.a. the Queen of the Dolomites). You can start, for example, from any spot in Alta Badia and return before the lifts close or, if you prefer a more leisurely pace, take advantage of the free shuttle connection that takes skiers to the Plan de Corones ski area in 15 minutes.
