FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

The best time for trail running in the Dolomites is generally from June to October, when most trails are free of snow and weather conditions are more stable.

From June to September, runners can enjoy long days and ideal temperatures for high-altitude running, while September and October offer a quieter atmosphere, fewer crowds, and spectacular autumn colours, perfect for a more immersive experience in nature.

Yes, the Dolomites are an ideal destination for trail running, thanks to their incredible variety of trails, elevation gains, and landscapes.

They offer routes for all levels: from easier valley runs to more technical high-altitude trails for experienced runners. Stunning scenery, mountain huts along the routes, and a well-maintained trail network make this region one of the most popular destinations in Europe for mountain running.

If you book a tour with Holimites, you will receive everything you need to explore independently and safely: detailed maps, a personalised roadbook with the day-by-day itinerary, and all practical information. Before the tour, a briefing with a Holimites expert is included, where you will receive useful advice and can clarify any questions.

For a trail running tour in the Dolomites, it is essential to have lightweight but functional equipment.

We recommend bringing technical trail running shoes, breathable layered sports clothing, a light waterproof/windproof jacket, and a running backpack with water, energy snacks, and sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat).

For multi-day itineraries, you should also bring a light change of clothes, a sleeping bag liner for mountain huts, essential personal hygiene items, and, if desired, a headlamp and a small first aid kit.

If you book a tour with Holimites, you will also receive personalised maps and a detailed roadbook, allowing you to follow your multi-day itinerary independently and safely. Before departure, a briefing with a Holimites expert is included, with useful advice and route explanations.

On request, we can also organise a luggage transfer between mountain huts, allowing you to run lighter from one stage to the next.

In summer, most huts open from early June to late September, when hiking conditions are at their best and hut-to-hut trekking is fully available across the network of trails.

In winter, many huts located along the ski slopes in the Dolomiti Superski area are open throughout the ski season, offering food and services directly on the pistes. Some huts outside the ski areas may also remain open in winter, but opening times can vary significantly.

Since openings can vary depending local conditions, we always recommend checking official hut websites or updated local information before your trip.

No, a guide is not strictly necessary — the Dolomites offer a well-marked network of trails, making self-guided trail running a great option for experienced runners.

However, a guided experience can add significant value, especially on multi-day routes. A local expert provides route knowledge, safety support, and insights into the terrain, weather conditions, and local environment, helping you focus fully on the run.

With Holimites, you can also benefit from carefully planned itineraries, maps, and a detailed roadbook, ensuring a smooth and independent experience. On request, we can additionally organize luggage transfer between accommodations, allowing you to run lighter from stage to stage.

Designing a tour at Holimites is like perfecting a traditional family recipe. Since our founding in 2000, we’ve never relied on preset templates, but on people.

Growing up in our family-run hotels, we spent a great deal of time with our guests—listening to their dreams and learning what truly makes a holiday unforgettable.

We take these “ingredients” — feedback, “wow” moments, and those “it was the best day ever!” experiences — and combine them with our deep knowledge of the region.

Like a chef who removes anything that might spoil a dish, we carefully filter out logistical obstacles that could compromise the experience.

The result is a perfectly balanced itinerary, refined year after year, able to evolve over time while remaining deeply rooted in authentic Ladin hospitality.
